M9
Bayonet collector
Extrodinaire
The
M9 Bayonet from the 1980's had a lot to do with
the
inspiration of Relentless knives. Some like it and others don't, but
the
design and the internals of the tool marked a big change in
the
almost out dated idea of attaching a knife to the end of a rifle.
Before
the M9, bayonets were not considered cutting tools.
They
were tempered for flexibility and mostly to soft to hold an edge for
more than a few cuts. They were made to be spears and did a good job at
that task.
The M9 is different in that since ground warfare
had
changed considerably, who needed a spear.......but what about a good
knife. So the M9 was made to function as both, being
resilient
enough to handle the stress of spear combat as well as being
able
to hold an edge and function as a cutting tool.
The rest of
the story is detailed history, and although plenty
interesting,
I will leave those details to the
better informed.
Another
Great thing about the M9 Bayonet is the people who collect them, and
follow the history of weaponry , both interesting and enjoyable.
One
of these people is a guy and his "BABE" as he calls her who is also a
great photographer. They live on the French Riviera,
France, and are avid shooters as well as collectors of the M9
bayonet
and other military survival knives.
The following is a
tribute
to them both who over the past years have become very good friends.
Their enthusiasm is contagious. If your interested in the M9 bayonet
and other military survival knives check out their web site.

M9M4 HYBRID
BAYONET ...
5 UNITS MADE
FOR M4 CARBINE MODEL COMMANDO
BARREL
LENGTH 11.5 Made for U.S. NAVY SEALs - U.S.M.C - U.S. SPECIAL FORCES
URBAN COMBAT

In
June of 2008 , I started a prototype project to adapt an M9 BAYONET to
fit on an M4 CARBINE with a barrel length of 11.5 “SABRE
DEFENSE”.
It
was necessary for me to ask to my friend Joe
ANVIL for his help, he is a “SPECIALIST of C.Q.B.”
For
the assembly of this M9M4 HYBRID , we equipped an M4 CARBINE with a
special flash hider, the B.E. MEYERS M249F, probably one of the best
F.H. use by the U.S. ARMY.
This
M9M4 HYBRID design seemed to be the logical result of a special request
from my friend and policeman Philippe L. He could benefit
from an
URBAN KNIFE FIGHT (type : PHROBIS C.U.K) and at the same be able use
this modified knife as a bayonet or conversely.
In fact, not too long and not too short for a
fight in a tiny room environment or a stair well in a building or house
.
For
evaluation and testing , three of these M9M4 HYBRID will be given to
Sirs Barry BROWN (RIP June 2011)(Owner of M9 Lan-Cay Company), Homer M.
BRETT ( MARINE Veteran , Historian & Consultant for the U.S.
military, in the passed) ... and the third, to my American Uncle .

In many places the

is more than a brand name on a knife.
Websters

re-lent-less; Unmoved by love or

Unceasing, as without mercy.

Stuff
we are still
working on
by: Daniel M. Certo
Fact is, I love making knives and developing NEW
models.
Sometimes
it's a quick draw of a new shape, cut and grind it, and a new
knife is born. But
mostly it's not.
There are
thousands of knife designs available today,
and more
thousands that have come and gone.
In my
opinion, for a knife design to be effective, comfortably functional,
and
attractive all at once involves repeated testing and revision.
The M4
Ranger is one of my favorites. It originated as a Relentless model last
year
and is
still being refined. I always liked having a guard on a knife. Not only
to
protect
the hand from running up on the blade, but I like the way it looks.
Form
follows function in this, but I always must have both.
I missed
the knife makers revolution which I'm told happened back in the 1990's
where
knife makers rebelled against their predecessors and mostly did away
with knife guards.
Maybe they are not needed. From a makers
point of view, it's far easier to build a knife
without them.
After all, weren't they a hold over from the middle ages.
They were borrowed from the European broad sword and
served to protect the hands during sword and dagger fights. But I
figure if your in a situation were hurting your self could mean total
disaster and mission failure why take
the chance when a guard could prevent that.
Further,
I like the extra holes that are sometimes found in guards as they just
come in handy for a variety of activities.
The same is true for lanyard holes. A lot of people think
they are not terribly useful, but tethering your tool at times can
prevent it's loss. If it's all you have, losing it could cause you a
world of trouble.

These
and many other thoughts went into my designing of the M4
Ranger.
I incorporated all the things I like in a knife into this
model.
There are
three distinct blade shapes and grinds.
These
will be in next years catalog as the M4 Ranger (clip point) M4 Recon
(drop point) and the M4 Ark Angel
(spear point). They will be available in various blade
lengths,
both serrated and non and with a few currently unmentioned enhancements.

The
US Army's 10th Mtn div has been real special to me for quite
a
few years. Last year I announced a Special Edition 10th Mtn div M1 MAP
knife that has not materialized yet.
Not
because I could not make the knife, but because finding
an
engraver who could help in the production to make
it
a real memento that could be offered to active duty
and
vets at an affordable price had not been located. In the past
month, I believe that has changed.
Not completely
sure yet, but keep watching the Enews for updates.

Dan,
I
know you're busy and it's not high priority on my part but sometime I
would like your thoughts on 8670M/L6 High Performance Alloy
steel.
Matt: Hi, 8670M is a Great steel for a hard
use knife.
Most steels are not invented for knives,
the
market is just not big enough.
L6 steel is a tool steel
commonly used for
band saw blades in it's thinner form.
and
8670M is a stand in for L6 with a
bit less of the alloys
that make L6
what it is. My suppliers only have
it
in 3/16 thickness and tell me they sell it to
saw makers who
make Redwood tree saw
mill blades from it.
8670M
endures high temperatures,
extreme
shock, bending and all sorts of abuse that many other tool steels
just won't take. When compared to a lot of carbon
steel alloys
used for knives (1095,01,D2) and tools it has additional strength,
ductility and toughness. It also costs more.
Close
examination
shows this alloy has a relatively high carbon content for cutting edge
retention, nickel and molybdenum for toughness and chromium for
corrosion resistance and, maintains its strength and excellent
abrasion resistance under high and low temperature operations.
Approx
alloy mixture
C = .75, Ni - .70/1.00, Cr = .30/.50, Mo =
.05/.10, Mn = .40/.60, Si = .20/.35, S & P = .025 max
I
choose steels for their ruggedness, because the knives I make are
intended to
endure above and beyond what the average user
would need in a knife.
If I was able to get 8670 in 1/4"
thickness, which I'm working on now,
I would select it above
5160 for all my carbon steel knives.
It is almost as tough as
5160, with twice the edge retention. It's is not to be compared with
CPMs30V or CPM3V because
those steels are made from
a different process and and are just so far advanced that there is not
much comparison Not many people use 8670M for knives, because it's hard
to get in various thicknesses,
and many don't care about a
knife's ability to endure lateral force and still be a cutting
tool. They call this type of knife a crow bar with an edge. I see it
differently, but understand. Tools mostly have specific
uses
and that's just the way things are done.

Classic
Movie of the Month: Punisher: War Zone (2008): The flick isn't quite a
year old yet, and it didn't make much money when it was released in
theaters, and as a result has a bad reputation, one that isn't deserved
in my opinion. It's got everyone. A great Punisher in Ray Stevenson, a
great villain in Jigsaw (Dominic West), and some great, gory action
sequences. The Punisher doesn't mess around. Easily one of the greatest
B-movies of all time.

Relentless

Protection and Defense of the Constitution of the United States of
America !
By
Peter Ferrara, an associate professor of law at the George Mason
University School of Law.
September 25, 2001 9:20 a.m. National
Review
To Kill an American
You probably missed it in the rush of
news last week, but there was
actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper
an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.
So I just thought I would write to
let them know what an American is,
so they would know when they found one.
An American is English, or
French, or Italian, Irish, German,
Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian,
Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian,
Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.
An American may also be a Comanche,
Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho,
Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as Native
Americans.
An American is Christian, or he could
be Jewish, or Buddhist, or
Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan
. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as
each of them chooses.
An American is also free to believe
in no religion. For that he will
answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming
to speak for the government and for God.
An American lives in the most
prosperous land in the history of the
world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of
Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to
the pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans
have helped out just about every
other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing
in return.
When Afghanistan was over-run by the
Soviet army 20 years ago,
Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back
their country! As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given
more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.
Americans welcome the best of
everything...the best products, the best
books, the best music, the best food, the best services.
But they also welcome the least.
The national symbol of America , The
Statue of Liberty , welcomes your
tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the
homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built
America .
Some of them were working in the Twin
Towers the morning of September
11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that
the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different
countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided
and abetted the terrorists.
So you
can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did
General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty
tyrants in the world. But, in doing
so you would just be killing
yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a
particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of
freedom
